Dog grooming is a highly skilled profession. Proper training should include extensive hands-on experience, essential theory, animal welfare, safe handling, commercial pet styling, breed-standard grooming and salon management.

Choose your course carefully. Some training providers may promise an excellent education but offer only a QQI related certificate worth 15 credits or their own certificate of attendance or completion. If the qualification is not externally regulated or worth a decent amount of credits, ask what independent standard the training has been assessed against—and whether employers, insurers or future regulators will recognise it. They will tell you their certificate is all you need but please be careful of this as it is only a matter of time before this industry becomes regulated so your training and accreditation will need to meet certain criteria in order to be a recognised Qualified Dog Groomer
